I just did an install directly to the hdd. It appears that eth0 is recognized by the os and that it is functioning but cannot connect on the web or ping. Also wondering if there is a way to get the os to recognize the wireless card in this netbook (Acer Aspire One d257). Any help is very appreciated.

You may try a couple of things really. About 2 yrs ago I tried an Ubuntu install on my Acer Aspire One, and had the same problem.

1) may try using the IEEE PC Linux kernel. Just google it and I'm sure you will find it and instructions.
2) Or check out this site http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Download#Download_latest_Linux_wireless_drivers

I just installed krypton on my acer and haven't started addressing the wireless LAN issues yet. I'm having a problem with letter key presses showing on screen as numbers. Reboot stops for a little bit but starts swapping letters for numbers. Incredibly annoying and frustrating!

If all else fails may look into installing the netbook Ubuntu kernel. May be the same as the eeePC kernel. Not sure though.

make sure your installing the eeepc linux kernel and not the default linux kernel.

most distros have a customized kernel for the netbooks.

you have to see a couple things different though like turning swap off and such.
