Title: boot fails
Post by: twister on December 12, 2009, 06:33:44 PM
I'm not sure if it's a bug, or just my hardware issue, i didn't know to which category it belongs, so posting it here.
So i have two computers at home, one laptop - Toshiba u200 Core 2 Duo, and the other one desktop Athlon XP1600+ (very old box).
The boot is successfull on the laptop, however, when trying to boot from the Athlon the fllowing output is shown, and it loops unless rebooted:

boot:

Perhaps an idea, when you see the grub menu, edit the first entry, then modify the line which starts by kernel: at the end of line, remove quiet splash et add irqpoll all_generic_ide.
Press b to boot and tell me if it is good or not.

Actually, the issue appears on the Live CD boot, so I can't see the GRUB at all, there's ISOLINUX instead, and I can't find method to edit it's options.  :(

Oh ok ok.

Well, you have to extract from the ISO the file /isolinux/isolinux.cfg and edit like that below.

Before:
Code:
DEFAULT live
LABEL live
  kernel /casper/vmlinuz
  append  file=/cdrom/preseed/custom.seed boot=casper initrd=/casper/initrd.gz quiet splash --
LABEL xforcevesa
  kernel /casper/vmlinuz
  append  file=/cdrom/preseed/custom.seed boot=casper xforcevesa initrd=/casper/initrd.gz quiet splash --
(...)

After:
Code:
DEFAULT live
LABEL live
  kernel /casper/vmlinuz
  append  file=/cdrom/preseed/custom.seed boot=casper initrd=/casper/initrd.gz pci=nomsi irqpoll --
LABEL xforcevesa
  kernel /casper/vmlinuz
  append  file=/cdrom/preseed/custom.seed boot=casper xforcevesa initrd=/casper/initrd.gz pci=nomsi irqpoll --
(...)

The first one is the default boot, the second is if you have video bad issue.

Thanks, i'll try it in a couple of days, and then post my results.  ;D

Didn't try the solution yet, however, it's obviously not the problem with Matriux. It's most likely something wrong with my CD-ROM, as the error occurs when it's being loaded. I'm having the same issue booting Fedora 12 live CD on the same Workstation, will post the results when solve it.

Why don't you try booting from your Flash drive?
.
In that way, you can find the problem is actually associated with CD Drive or any other part of your system
.
You can follow these steps: Matriux Beta 1 - Lithium | USB Install  (http://forum.matriux.com/index.php?topic=820.0) by  viralnexxus (http://forum.matriux.com/index.php?action=profile;u=83)

Thanks Neo, but the problem, is actually, not only when booting from Live CD.

Made an experiment :

Installed Ubuntu 7.10 - everything OK
Upgraded to Ubuntu 8.04 - everything OK
Upgraded to Ubuntu 8.10 - Couldn't boot the latest kernel showing the same error (kernel 2.6.24) however could boot using previous kernels ( luckily  ;D )
Upgraded to Ubuntu 9.04 - The same thing as previous
Upgraded to Ubuntu 9.10 - Could boot the 2.6.31-17 kernel, couldn't the oldest, approximately due to the same issue.

So, I suppose, it is either the kernel bug in version 2.4.24 - 2.4.27, or just some kind of incompatibility with the CD-ROM, because it says that ata2 is CD-ROM. The latest kernel, provided with, Ubuntu  works fine, so I'm happy ( almost, would be better if it worked faster :D )

P.S. : suppose that this topic should be moved from this category, as it's not related to the MATRIUX, but don't know where.  :(

You are encouraged to test Tiger-222 (http://forum.matriux.com/index.php?action=profile;u=2)'s method of removing quiet splash and adding irqpoll all_generic_ide. (http://forum.matriux.com/index.php?topic=768.msg868#msg868)
